About

fourfortytwo was set up in September 2010 by Philip Venables as a small and personal artist agency for British chamber music groups.  It started with EndymionOnyx Brass and the New London Chamber Ensemble and has since grown to include the Phoenix Piano Trio.

The aim of fourfortytwo is to provide development and consultation for the best chamber music groups and ensembles and to promote them to festivals, music societies and promoters in the UK and Europe.

For more information about us and our groups, click around this site, or contact us at the email addresses above.

The name fourfortytwo

All musicians playing music in any genre written after 1900 tune to the note ‘A’ which is fixed in the UK to 440 Hertz (which means 440 vibrations per second).   This is an arbitrary designation… 300 years ago the pitch of ‘A’ used to be lower.  Consequently there are loads of music agencies, bands, publishers and promoters using ’440′ or ‘fourforty’ as their name or logo.  You can forget finding a decent available URL of just ‘fourforty’.

However, Germans are different.   They widely tune to  442 Hz… a little bit sharper than us Brits.  Since I’m spending an awful lot of time in Germany these days, fourfortytwo.com seemed like a wonderful choice.

… Luckily www.viervierzwei.de is a blog about football.  No competition ;-)
