Phoenix Piano Trio on In Tune, May 2012

Our favourite piano trio – Phoenix – will be appearing on BBC Radio 3′s “In Tune” tomorrow, Tuesday 18th Dec, at about 4.30pm. You can listen live from the BBC website, and we’ll put up a “Listen Again” link as soon as we have one.

They’re being interviewed by Sean Rafferty ahead of their concert at Wigmore Hall this Saturday, 22nd, 7.30pm. Audience (and Trio) favourite, Beethoven’s “Archduke” Op.97 is paired with Schumann’s “Phantasiestücke” Op.88 and Haydn’s E-flat trio HXV:30. ENDYMION on BBC Radio 3′s Hear and Now, Saturday 21st July

Endymion’s recent concert with the BBC Singers went fantastically well last week,  at Cheltenham International Music Festival.  The concert was recorded by the BBC, and included world premieres of pieces by John Tavener and Judith Bingham, performed by Endymion and the BBC Singers, conducted by David Hill.

The edition of Hear and Now will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 90-93 FM on Saturday 21st July, starting at 22:30.  You can tune in live online or listen again for seven days after the broadcast, here.

Onyx Brass on BBC Radio 3

Onyx Brass made another lively appearance last Thursday on In Tune, BBC Radio 3′s drivetime show with Sean Rafferty.  The quintet were promoting their gala performance at the Southbank Centre, which is this coming Thursday at 7.45pm.  Tickets are still available here.  They performed live in the studio with baritone Mark Stone – check it out here!

New London Chamber Ensemble on BBC Radio 3

The NLCE featured on BBC Radio 3′s In Tune programme with Sean Rafferty, joined by composer Sally Beamish and music historian Dr Fiona Elliott.

They were previewing their wonderful “Mozart, Mechanical Marvels and More…” programme which took place last night, 27th July, to a packed house at Wigmore Hall.   With a fascination for the latest technology in Mozart’s Vienna in 1790, the quintet commissioned new realisations of four of his miniatures written for mechanical instruments.  Composers Sally Beamish, Julian Philips, Philip Cashian and Martin Butler all made new arrangements of these pieces, and Sally also wrote a set of variations upon her theme.   Sitting alongside that in the Wigmore concert were Ligeti’s Bagatelles for quintet, and John Woolrich’s Book of Studies I, including miniatures such as “Clockwork Chorale”.    The links are clear!

Lastly, the quintet were joined by piano superstar Angela Hewitt for the sublime Mozart Quintet for Piano and Winds in E flat.

Phoenix Piano Trio on Radio 3

Phoenix Piano Trio are wrapping up their Beethoven series this week, with the final programme featuring his best known trio, the Archduke, and a new piece to accompany it by Cheryl Frances Hoad.   Last night they performed this programme at the Forge in Camden.  Tomorrow night they take it to Hampshire, and on Saturday to the Holywell Music Room in Oxford.

The trio appeared on BBC Radio 3′s In Tune a few weeks ago, promoting the Beyond Beethoven series, and they performed excerpts from two Beethoven trios and the new commission by Philip Venables, Klaviertrio im Geiste. You can hear them with Sean Raffery live in the studio, here!

Phoenix and NLCE concerts this week

Fourfortytwo is taking over The Forge in Camden this week!  Well, on Wednesday and Sunday at least.

On Wednesday night, come along to hear the continuation of the Phoenix Piano Trio’s Beyond Beethoven series – including Beethoven’s ‘Ghost Trio’ and a new companion commission to accompany it by Philip Venables, called Klaviertrio im Geiste.

You can also catch Sholto, Marie and Jonny from the Phoenix Piano Trio on BBC Radio 3′s In Tune on Friday afternoon at about 4.45pm, performing excerpts from this concert and talking about their Beyond Beethoven project.  They’ll be repeating the programme at Oxford’s Holywell Music Room on Saturday evening.

On Sunday evening, we’re back again at The Forge for the New London Chamber Ensemble’s performance with guest pianist Michael Dussek. Their concert ‘Piano and Winds Converge at Forge’ will feature a revised sextet by Julian Philips, written specially for the quintet, and also brand new arrangements of Mozart miniatures by Philip Cashian and Julian Philips, alongside Mozart’s popular Quintet for piano and Winds and Poulenc’s lively Sextet.  Should be a colourful evening!  There’s also an interval talk by Catherine Burd, the architect who designed the Forge venue.  Tickets available here.
